The Sedges Tile Lake 26th April

The Sedges is a delightful fishery just outside Bridgwater. It has three lakes - Tile, Brick and a canal snake lake and all are very nicely stocked with all sorts of species. One of the good things about the place is that you do not have to bring nets with you, they supply them all. The match, pleasure and carp angler are all well catered for at the Sedges- it's well worth a visit. You can contact the venue through its web site.

The Sedges Tile lake

This was an invitational event (Lordy's birthday) and hopefully all who turned up enjoyed themselves (The cakes went anyway!) Chris won it with 126lb 11oz - mostly carp which he caught shallow at 11m using an Drennan AS2 pole float and 8mm pellet. He did have a few fish on the pellet waggler but the windy conditions made it difficult to present the bait properly. He also caught a few at 6m over hemp and corn.
Chris with just a few of his catch.

Second place went to Mike Steel with an all carp net of 92lb 9oz and third place went to Matt Taynton with 88lb 2oz. This included a 3lb 1oz eel - one hell of a snake!

This one was 3lb 1oz and there are some even bigger ones around.
Oh, and Lordy was the bridesmaid again! He came fourth with 65lb 13oz using a mixture of pellet waggler, cage feeder and his new Drennan Acolyte carp pole. Hard pellet did the trick on the pellet waggler and the cage feeder but he reverted to the Drennan 6mm crab and krill "Yum Yums" again to fish at 8m for a total of 15 carp.

The smile is genuine - honest!

New from Sonubait at Fish & Field, the Action boilies in Strawberry, Crab and Crayfish, white chocolate and pineapple. These are high leakage boilies for instant action, developed especially for day ticket waters and highly pressured venues. Action is virtually guaranteed.
The new "Hemp and.." range has hemp and krill, hemp and meat chunks and spicy sausage hemp. All are ready to use with perfectly cooked hemp.

New from Sticky - Pure natural betaine. A fantastic addition to any particles, pellets or spod mix. Helps to boost attractors and liquid foods
Talking of liquid foods, the new Aqua Amino liquid is an extremely soluble "fish soup". It's the perfect bait soak liquid penetrating much deeper into a bait's core. Find these items at the carp bar at Fish & Field.

Look after your elastic!

Elastics galore at Fish & Field
Lordy went to Ivy House last Sunday and drew peg 45 - a noted (according to Des Shipp and other worthy notables) carp peg. So, Lordy dutifully set up the appropriate carp rigs and set about fishing. It was not long before he hooked into a good sized carp which hared off into the middle of the lake. Having turned the fish and coaxed it to just in front, he grabbed the pulla bung to tighten the elastic and was met with a snapping sound followed by a short piece of elastic and a bead in his hand.

Now, you may think that the fish sailed off into the distance. Not so! The elastic inside the top two was so gummed up that he managed to grab the other end and handline a 12lb mirror carp to the net.
The moral? Keep your elastics clean and check for wear regularly.

Granville catches his first big'un of the year.

This was Granville's first carp for 2015 from his syndicate lake near Gloucester. It weighed in at 26lb 2oz and was caught on a 9 foot, 3-piece 2 3/4 test curve stalking rod.

The rig used, for those who get turned on by these sort of things (Granville's words, not mine!) was a two inch hooklength made up from ESP 20lb sink link, tied up as a confidence rig (as in Chris Haswell's book "Happy Days"), with the new, very sharp size 8 Korda Krank barbless at the business end. The bait was a betalin flavoured dumbbell that just counterbalanced the weight of the hook.

Needless to say, Granville is a happy chappie!

A beautiful creature - and the carp ain't bad either!

Ivy HouseLakes 12th April 2015

Ivy House then

Ivy House now

Chris has not been to Ivy house since the new owners took over so it was a bit of a surprise for him to note how much has changed in the past year or so. A very acceptable breakfast was followed by the draw. Lordy drew peg 7 and Chris drew peg 40 - a peg that he always wanted to fish but was never put in the bag by the old regime.

Chris decided very early on that he wanted to fish for the roach - a favourite tactic of his. He used a single caster at 5m shallow and soon built up a good net of roach. After some time he noticed that a lot of carp were topping out in front of him at about 12m. An 8mm pellet fished shallow with caster as attractors bagged him a carp of about 14lb followed shortly by another of about 5lb. After that the carp "dried up" so he switched back to the roach. With a little time to go he had another look at 12m and hooked and landed a good sized carp to give him 3rd place in the match with 39lb 6oz including 13lb of roach winning him the silvers pool.

Lordy arrived at his peg to find a very strong wind beating him up! Having retrieved pole sections several times he decided to use the cage feeder - a safer option. Using his 12' Drennan carp feeder rod, a Diawa Whisker reel loaded with 6lb Drennan feeder line, a small cage feeder loaded with Dynamite baits green swim stim pellets and double 4mm Drennan "Yum Yum" pellets on a size 16 hook, he wafted it all out to about 15m. Very soon he hooked and landed a decent carp, followed by 5 more all on the "Yum Yum" to finish with 34lb 6oz - just out the money (as usual!)

In the café afterwards for the result we were greeted with a bowl of chicken nuggets and chips - very civilised!
